I really valued this commentary Eric. I'm a long time follower of your thinking, and once again you articulate things/present insight that make sense to me in ways others don't. I'm increasingly seeing the limitations of market-based mechanisms for similar human behaviour/physcology reasons as I see you present here. I read your peice here to say that actually this might be better solved at the government rather than a market level, and although I never really subscribed to that approach previously, your argument here is certainly the best one I think I have heard. Of course, it's not binary and we'll still need environmental positive/active market mechanisms, but I sure agree that your approach is the most well-thought out response to why market mechanisms have yet to achieve maximum impact, and where to head based on that knowledge.

Great ideas Eric. I would note that sometimes you do get a new service by investing in nature. For example: 1) cities (like Houston) that are overwhelmed by excess water when there is extreme weather/heavy rain, can obtain nature's service of absorbing excess water, cleaning it, and absorbing/storing it. This can be achieved by adding nature to cities (parks, culverts etc). However, one challenge is the engineer types who make decisions like this expect really solid evidence/data about what the investment in nature will deliver and what they won't be able to provide so that they can compare the green infrastructure option to the gray one. 2) Coastal ecosystems provide valuable protection from extreme weather. Can it out-compete gray infrastructure like seawalls? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. But sometimes champions of investments in nature exaggerate nature's services or minimize the shortcomings. We could go on and on like this: trees/parks in cities to clean air (by absorb particulate pollution and reducing heat; improved ranch land management or draw down and store carbon; stronger mychorizzal networks to draw down and store carbon underground m); improve and protect watersheds to protect and improve water supply (ie, the famous nyc example). In each of these cases, there is an opportunity to develop more robust evidence on what investments in nature are likely to produce. And, finally, of course the great and mostly obvious and wonderful co-benefits of investments in nature need to be established and vakued.
